Dr. Yvonne Menard and me

Today is a special 10 year birthday for me. It was ten years ago today that I took a little trip to Quebec, home of my grandmother, to find a little more peace with my life. It was a 12 day tour. It was a very sacred time of my life. I was 42 then. I figure, knock on wood, that I’ll live until I am 84 so about half my life as a guy, the second half as a gal. I would go through the boy-to-girl converter box as I like to say, my way of not wanting to look too closely at surgical details. A beautiful man named Yvonne Menard graced me his kindness. He is retired now, no longer operating at the Centre Métropolitain de Chirurgie in Montreal, which suffered from arson this last year. He had lost count, but he performed over 2000 gender confirming surgeries before…a few of which were and are my friends. I don’t know that I would have the energy to do it all again, but I am ever so grateful that I was blessed by this man. He is one of my heroes, and you cannot doubt for a second, that he took a brave stand for the work he did, in times that were far more hateful than today. So, today I celebrate quietly. Already writing some poetry…my constant companion in life. And I especially celebrate Yvonne Menard…thank you and bless you…je vous remercie et vous bénisse.
